Study in Leeds: universities, costs and careers for international students
Leeds is the biggest financial and legal centre in the UK outside London, the national headquarters of NHS England, and a city where roughly one in ten residents is a student. The University of Leeds is a large Russell Group institution with an unusually broad course list, Leeds Beckett takes a large international intake on more accessible terms, and the whole city is compact enough that most students live within a 20-minute walk of campus. Rents are among the lowest of any major UK student city. Here is what to weigh.

What it costs
Among the cheapest ways to hold a Russell Group degree.
- Tuition for international students: roughly £22,000-£31,000 a year at the University of Leeds and £15,000-£18,000 at Leeds Beckett; medicine and dentistry are far higher
- Living costs: budget £800-£1,050 a month. A room in a shared house in Hyde Park or Headingley runs £400-£600 - among the lowest of any large UK student city; university halls £550-£850
- Proof of funds for the visa: the non-London maintenance rate applies - check the current monthly figure and hold it for 28 consecutive days
- Transport: most students walk; a student bus pass is around £250-£350 for the year and the train to Manchester takes under an hour
- Scholarships: Chevening and Commonwealth awards, the Leeds International Excellence and Global Development scholarships, and Leeds Beckett’s international merit awards
Life, safety & culture
A compact student city with everything in walking distance.
- Everything is in English, and the Yorkshire accent is one of the easier ones to tune into
- Chapeltown and Harehills have long-established African and Caribbean communities - the Leeds West Indian Carnival is the oldest in Europe - and there are African food shops and churches across the north-east of the city
- Safety: the student corridor from the university up through Hyde Park is busy at all hours, though shared-house burglaries are the local nuisance rather than street crime; the universities run free security-marking and safe-taxi schemes
- Healthcare: full NHS access through the Immigration Health Surcharge, with Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s - one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe - both in the city
- The Yorkshire Dales and Peak District are an hour away, and Leeds Bradford Airport connects onward through the main European hubs
How to apply & the bureaucracy
Standard UK sequence, with Leeds Beckett considerably more flexible on entry than the University of Leeds.
- Bachelor’s: apply through UCAS by the late-January equal-consideration deadline; medicine and dentistry close in mid-October
- Master’s: apply directly to each university from September; the University of Leeds runs staged deadlines on its business and computing master’s and closes them early
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.0-6.5 for bachelor’s and 6.5 with 6.0 in each band for master’s at the University of Leeds; Leeds Beckett typically accepts 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band
- Foundation and pre-master’s pathways exist at both universities if your grades or certificate fall short of direct entry
- After the CAS, apply for the Student visa with proof of funds, the health surcharge and a TB certificate where required; allow three to eight weeks
