Study in Debrecen: universities, costs and careers for international students
Debrecen has quietly become the most international university city in Hungary. The University of Debrecen hosts close to 8,000 students from more than a hundred countries on one large campus and teaches over a hundred programmes in English. What is new is the job market around it: BMW began series production at a full vehicle plant here at the end of 2025, and CATL is building one of Europe’s largest battery factories on the same edge of the city, between them promising thousands of engineering, logistics and quality jobs in a city of two hundred thousand. Rent is roughly half of Budapest’s. Here is what to weigh.
Why Debrecen

- The University of Debrecen is the largest higher-education institution outside Budapest and hosts close to 8,000 international students - the biggest foreign student body of any Hungarian university
- More than a hundred programmes taught in English, from preparatory courses through bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral study
- BMW Group Plant Debrecen started series production of the electric iX3 at the end of 2025, and CATL is building a battery plant nearby that the city expects to employ around 9,000 people
- One campus rather than a scattered city university: faculties, halls of residence, the clinical centre, sports facilities and the botanical garden sit together at the northern end of the Nagyerdő park
- Living costs are roughly half of Budapest’s, and dormitory places are open to international students
- Debrecen International Airport flies directly to a handful of European cities; Budapest is two and a half hours away by train
Universities & popular courses
Debrecen is a one-university city, so the question is not which institution but which faculty - and the medical faculties are what most international students come for.
- General Medicine in English: a six-year programme with a large international cohort, taught through the university’s own clinical centre - the biggest teaching-hospital network in eastern Hungary
- Dentistry and Pharmacy in English: five-year programmes, both smaller and both competitive, with dentistry in particular holding very few places
- Engineering and computer science: mechanical, electrical, civil and environmental engineering plus computer science and business informatics - the programmes closest to the new automotive and battery employers on the edge of the city
- Agricultural and food sciences: Debrecen sits in the middle of the Great Plain and its agricultural faculty is the strongest in the country, with English-taught degrees in agricultural engineering, food safety and rural development
- Also taught in English: business administration, international economics, molecular biology, biotechnology, physiotherapy and nursing
- A one-year preparatory course in English is available where a school-leaving certificate does not yet meet the requirement for medicine or engineering - a common route in from West Africa
- Curriculum: bachelor’s degrees run three to four years and master’s two, while medicine runs six with the final year spent in clinical rotations
Career prospects & ROI
Debrecen is the one Hungarian city outside the capital where a large employer might hire you in the same place you studied.
- Industry connections: BMW, CATL, Vitesco, Schaeffler, Krones, Diehl Aviation and ZF all have plants or engineering sites in or around Debrecen - a concentration that did not exist here a decade ago
- For engineering, IT and logistics students that means internships and graduate jobs in the same city as the degree, which is unusual outside Budapest
- Medical graduates: a Hungarian medical degree is recognised across the EU, and Debrecen’s graduates move on to residency in Hungary, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK, or return home with an EU-recognised qualification. Check the recognition procedure in your own country before you start - it is the step students most often leave too late
- Work while you study: up to 30 hours a week during term and full-time for up to 90 days outside it, on a student residence permit and with no separate work permit. Confirm the current limits with the immigration authority
- After you graduate: the nine-month job-search and entrepreneurship residence permit applies here as everywhere in Hungary, cannot be extended, and must be filed at least 15 days before your student permit runs out
- The honest trade-off: outside the automotive and medical tracks Debrecen’s graduate market is thin and salaries sit below Budapest’s. Most non-medical graduates who stay in Hungary end up moving to the capital

What it costs
The strongest financial argument for Debrecen is not the tuition - it is the rent.
- Self-financed tuition at the University of Debrecen: roughly EUR 3,000-7,000 a year for engineering, IT, agriculture and business. General Medicine is in the region of USD 18,000-19,000 a year and dentistry higher, charged per semester
- Stipendium Hungaricum covers tuition in full plus the HUF 43,700 monthly stipend, a dormitory place or HUF 40,000 a month towards rent, and medical insurance - and Debrecen takes one of the largest scholarship intakes in the country
- Living costs: budget EUR 450-650 a month. A room in a shared flat runs EUR 200-350 and a dormitory place considerably less - the single biggest financial argument for Debrecen over Budapest
- Local transport is a tram and bus network with a cheap student pass, and the campus, the halls and the clinical centre sit close enough together that many students walk or cycle
- One-off costs: visa and residence-permit fees, health insurance for the whole stay, a rental deposit and - for medicine - the entrance-examination fee
- The visa asks for proof of means for the year, shown as a bank statement or the scholarship award letter
Life, safety & culture
A calm, cheap, walkable city with a park at the end of the main street and a student population from a hundred countries.
- Language: teaching is in English but the city is not - Debrecen has far fewer English speakers than Budapest, and Hungarian matters more here for renting, shopping and part-time work
- A low-crime city of about 200,000, small enough to cross on foot and safe to walk at night - the usual reason students give for preferring it to the capital
- The Nagyerdő, the "Great Forest" park, sits directly behind the main university building, with the thermal baths, the stadium and most of the halls of residence inside it
- Healthcare: the university’s clinical centre is the largest hospital in eastern Hungary and treats its own students, and insurance for the whole stay is a condition of the residence permit
- Debrecen is Hungary’s Protestant capital and conservative by reputation, but its student population is one of the most international in central Europe - Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, Iranian, Jordanian and Chinese student associations are all long established
- The trade-off: less nightlife, fewer flights and a smaller cultural offer than Budapest, and winters on the Great Plain are cold and flat
How to apply & the bureaucracy
The same two routes as everywhere in Hungary, with a medical entrance exam that decides most international admissions here.
- Stipendium Hungaricum: apply through the Tempus Public Foundation portal and your home country’s sending partner in the same round, opening in November and closing in mid-January
- Self-financed: apply directly through the University of Debrecen’s online admission system. The main intake is September, applications open around January and run to the summer, and assessment is rolling - apply early, because medicine fills first
- Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy require an entrance examination in biology and chemistry with an oral component. The university runs it at centres abroad as well as in Debrecen and offers the preparatory year to applicants who fall short
- Language proficiency: typically IELTS 5.5-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 72-90 depending on the faculty, with an interview accepted in some cases where your schooling was in English
- Documents: school-leaving certificate or degree, transcripts, passport, medical certificate, motivation letter and references - legalised with an apostille or consular legalisation and translated
- After acceptance, apply for the type D visa through the Enter Hungary portal at the Hungarian consulate, then convert it into a study residence permit after arrival. The university’s coordinating centre for international education handles a very large volume of these every September
