Study in Ankara: universities, costs and careers for international students
Ankara is the serious, slightly austere alternative to Istanbul. It has Türkiye’s two strongest English-medium universities, a cost of living around a third lower than the coast, and an employer base - ministries, embassies, defence contractors, research institutes - that exists nowhere else in the country. Winters are genuinely cold and the city will never be called beautiful. If you are here to study and get hired, that is not the point. Here is what to weigh.

What it costs
A capital city on provincial prices - Ankara is where the Turkish cost argument is strongest.
- Tuition at state universities including METU: roughly USD 500-2,500 a year for international students, a fraction of what an equivalent European engineering degree costs
- Bilkent and TOBB ETÜ are private: expect USD 9,000-20,000 a year before scholarships, and both discount heavily for strong applicants
- Living costs: budget EUR 350-600 a month. Shared flats in Çankaya, Kızılay and Bahçelievler run EUR 180-350; METU’s on-campus dormitories are cheaper still and put you a walk from the lecture halls
- Transport: the metro plus the university ring buses cover almost everything a student needs, and a student card keeps monthly transport under EUR 12
- Türkiye Bursları covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend, insurance and flights - Ankara universities are among the most requested destinations on that scholarship, so apply early
Life, safety & culture
Quieter, greener and more student-shaped than Istanbul, with a campus culture that carries the social life.
- Language: METU and Bilkent run in English and their campuses are genuinely international, but the city outside is Turkish-speaking - take the language classes
- Ankara is widely regarded as one of the safest large cities in Türkiye, with a heavy institutional presence and low street crime
- Campus life does the heavy lifting: METU alone has hundreds of student societies, its own forest, cinema, swimming pools and an annual spring festival that draws the whole city
- Healthcare: Hacettepe and Gazi run major teaching hospitals, and SGK cover after three months makes treatment cheap
- The trade-off is climate and nightlife - winters drop below freezing with snow, and the city is far more subdued than the coast
How to apply & the bureaucracy
The strongest universities here run the most structured admissions in Türkiye - read the quota page before anything else.
- Bachelor’s: METU and Bilkent admit international students on SAT scores, their own entrance exams or recognised national certificates, with applications typically opening between March and July
- Master’s: apply directly to the department, September and February intakes, with transcripts, references, a statement of purpose and often a GRE or ALES score for engineering and economics
- English proficiency: METU asks for its own English exam or an equivalent IELTS/TOEFL score (usually IELTS 6.5 for postgraduate study); failing it means a year of preparatory English, which many students do
- Türkiye Bursları applications run January to February for a September start and let you name several universities and programmes in one application - a separate track worth doing alongside direct applications
- After acceptance: student visa from the Turkish embassy, then the student residence permit in Ankara within 30 days of arrival, with your acceptance letter, insurance and address registration
