The big programmes for African students

• DAAD (Germany): hundreds of scholarships, especially for master’s degrees - monthly stipend plus travel costs
• Eiffel Excellence (France): prestigious, for master’s and PhD - roughly €1,180/month
• Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary): full tuition + stipend + housing support; large quota for African countries
• Erasmus Mundus (EU): fully funded joint master’s programmes across several European countries
• Finnish university scholarships: many universities waive 50–100% of tuition for strong applicants

What a winning application looks like

• Apply 9–12 months early - most deadlines are October to January for the following year
• Strong, specific motivation letter: why this programme, why you, what you will do with it
• Good grades matter, but a clear goal and community engagement often decide
• Reference letters from professors or employers who actually know you
• Apply to several programmes - treating one scholarship as your only plan is the biggest mistake

Realistic plan B: study without a scholarship

• Choose a tuition-free country (Germany) instead of chasing rare full scholarships
• Combine: family sponsorship for year one + part-time job from year two
• Some countries allow students to work part-time from day one - it helps, but never finances everything

Warning: scholarship scams

• No real scholarship asks you to pay a “processing fee” to receive money
• Official scholarships are listed on government or university websites - verify every offer there
• If someone “guarantees” you a scholarship for money, walk away
