Study in Szeged: universities, costs and careers for international students
Szeged is the best research university in Hungary that is not in Budapest, and it is cheap. Albert Szent-Györgyi isolated vitamin C in its laboratories and won the Nobel Prize for it in 1937, a lineage the biochemistry, biology and pharmacy faculties still trade on. Around them sits ELI-ALPS, one of the most advanced laser research facilities in the world, and, since 2026, BYD’s first European passenger-car plant on the edge of the city. It is a compact, flat student town of about 160,000 in the far south of the country, with more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Hungary and living costs well below Budapest’s. Here is what to weigh.
Why Szeged

- The University of Szeged is consistently among the highest-placed Hungarian universities and the strongest research institution outside Budapest
- A real scientific pedigree: Albert Szent-Györgyi isolated vitamin C here and won the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and the medical school carries his name
- ELI-ALPS, the Extreme Light Infrastructure Attosecond Light Pulse Source, is a European research facility on the edge of the city, open to international users and to doctoral students
- BYD’s first European passenger-car factory is in Szeged, with trial production from early 2026 and a cooperation agreement with the university’s Faculty of Engineering
- The cheapest of Hungary’s four big student cities, and small and flat enough to cycle end to end - Szeged is genuinely a bicycle city
- The sunniest place in Hungary, on the Tisza river 15 km from the Serbian border and 45 km from the Romanian one
Universities & popular courses
Like Debrecen, Szeged is a one-university city - the choice is the faculty, and the sciences are what set it apart.
- General Medicine in English: a six-year programme with a long-established international intake, taught at the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School and the university’s clinical centre
- Pharmacy and Dentistry in English: five-year programmes, with pharmacy in Szeged holding a particularly strong reputation backed by the faculty’s research record
- Sciences: biology, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, molecular bioscience and computer science, with English-taught master’s and doctoral programmes tied to the research institutes on campus
- Engineering: the Faculty of Engineering runs food engineering, mechatronics and technical management, and has a formal partnership with the BYD plant in the city
- Also in English: business administration, international economics and law, agriculture and food science, and a range of teacher-training and humanities master’s
- Curriculum: bachelor’s degrees run three to four years, master’s two, medicine six and pharmacy and dentistry five, with the final medical year spent in clinical rotations
- A one-year preparatory course in English is available for applicants whose school-leaving qualification does not yet meet the entry requirement for medicine
Career prospects & ROI
Research and medicine are the two strong tracks here; the BYD plant is beginning to add a third.
- Industry connections: BYD’s new plant, the pharmaceutical and food industries around the city, and the research institutes - ELI-ALPS and the HUN-REN Biological Research Centre - which take doctoral students and interns
- For science and biotechnology students this is the strongest research environment in Hungary outside Budapest, and doctoral funding is available
- Medical graduates hold an EU-recognised qualification and go on to residency in Hungary, Germany, Scandinavia and beyond - confirm the recognition route in your home country before you enrol, not after
- Work while you study: up to 30 hours a week in term time and full-time for up to 90 days outside it, on a student residence permit with no separate work permit. Confirm the current limits with the immigration authority
- After you graduate: the same nine-month job-search and entrepreneurship residence permit as elsewhere in Hungary, non-extendable, filed at least 15 days before your student permit expires
- The honest trade-off: Szeged’s non-medical, non-research graduate market is small. The BYD plant changes the picture for engineers, but most business and humanities graduates who stay in Hungary move to Budapest

What it costs
The lowest student budget of the four cities, and the tuition is lower too outside medicine.
- Self-financed tuition: roughly EUR 3,000-6,500 a year for the sciences, engineering, IT and business. General Medicine is in the region of USD 16,000-18,000 a year, with dentistry higher and pharmacy lower, charged per semester
- Stipendium Hungaricum covers tuition in full and adds the HUF 43,700 monthly stipend, a dormitory place or HUF 40,000 a month towards rent, and medical insurance
- Living costs: budget EUR 400-600 a month, the lowest of the four cities. A room in a shared flat runs EUR 180-320 and a dormitory place much less
- Transport is a tram, trolleybus and bus network with a cheap student pass, but most students cycle - the city is flat and has a dense network of bicycle lanes
- One-off costs: visa and residence-permit fees, health insurance for the whole stay, a rental deposit and the entrance-examination fee for medicine
- The visa asks for proof of means for the year, shown as a bank statement or the scholarship award letter
Life, safety & culture
A planned nineteenth-century city, rebuilt after a flood, that works unusually well as a student town.
- Language: teaching is in English, daily life is in Hungarian, and there are fewer English speakers here than in Budapest. The university runs Hungarian courses - take one early
- A safe, compact city of about 160,000 where students walk and cycle at night without much thought, and where the crime that exists is petty
- Szeged was rebuilt almost entirely after the great Tisza flood of 1879, which is why the centre is a single coherent piece of planning - its boulevards are named after the European cities that paid for the reconstruction
- A serious student town: the university is the largest employer, the population swells in term time, the open-air theatre festival takes over Dóm tér in summer and the bar and café scene clusters around Dugonics tér
- Healthcare: the university clinical centre is the regional hospital and treats its own students, and insurance for the whole stay is a condition of the residence permit
- The trade-off: the nearest international airport is Budapest’s, two and a half hours away by train, and winters on the southern Plain are cold and foggy even if the summers are the hottest in the country
How to apply & the bureaucracy
The standard Hungarian process, with the medical entrance examination as the real filter.
- Stipendium Hungaricum: through the Tempus Public Foundation portal and your country’s sending partner in the same round - it opens in November and closes in mid-January
- Self-financed: apply directly through the University of Szeged’s admission system, generally between January and July for a September start, with rolling assessment
- Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy require an entrance examination in biology and chemistry with an oral component, held in Szeged and at centres abroad; the preparatory year is the route in for applicants who fall short
- Language proficiency: typically IELTS 5.5-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 72-90 depending on the faculty
- Documents: school-leaving certificate or degree, transcripts, passport, medical certificate, motivation letter and references - legalised with an apostille or consular legalisation and translated
- After acceptance, apply for the type D visa through the Enter Hungary portal at the Hungarian consulate and convert it into a study residence permit after you arrive; allow two to three months
