Study in Coventry: universities, costs and careers for international students
Coventry is a small city with two universities that could not be more different: the University of Warwick, a global top-100 research university on a large green campus, and Coventry University, one of the most international universities in the UK and built explicitly around employability. Between them they make Coventry one of the most international student cities in Britain. It also sits at the centre of the UK automotive and mobility industry, and it is cheap - considerably cheaper than Birmingham, twenty minutes up the line. Here is what to weigh.

- The UK Battery Industrialisation Centre and the electrification push mean sustained hiring for electrical, chemical and materials engineers - a genuinely growing field rather than a legacy one
- Warwick Business School and WMG graduates are recruited nationally into consulting, banking and technology; Coventry’s strength is placements and accredited professional courses
- Post-study work: the Graduate visa applies as everywhere in the UK, and Coventry’s careers service is unusually active in helping international students find sponsor-licensed employers
- Graduate salaries typically start £24,000-£30,000, and engineering graduates from WMG considerably higher

What it costs
One of the cheapest UK cities to be a student in, with two very different tuition levels.
- Tuition for international students: roughly £16,000-£20,000 a year at Coventry University, and £25,000-£35,000 at the University of Warwick
- Living costs: budget £750-£1,000 a month. A room in a shared house runs £400-£600, among the lowest in England; purpose-built student accommodation in the city centre £550-£900
- Proof of funds for the visa: the non-London maintenance rate applies - check the current monthly figure and hold it for 28 consecutive days
- Transport: Coventry is small enough to walk or cycle; the train to Birmingham is 20 minutes and to London Euston about an hour

Life, safety & culture
A small, quiet city with an unusually international student body.
- Everything is in English, and with one of the highest proportions of international students in the UK you will not be unusual
- Coventry was UK City of Culture in 2021 and the city centre has been substantially rebuilt around the student population
- African and Caribbean communities are established in Foleshill and Hillfields, with churches, food shops and student societies; Birmingham’s much larger community is 20 minutes away by train
- Safety: a small city with the ordinary risks of an English city centre at night; both universities run campus security and safe-walk schemes
- Healthcare: full NHS access through the Immigration Health Surcharge, with University Hospital Coventry as the main teaching hospital
- Be realistic about the trade-off: Coventry is quiet. If you want a large night-time city, Birmingham and Manchester are close, but you will not find it here
How to apply & the bureaucracy
Two very different entry bars, and Coventry’s January intake is a genuine second chance.
- Bachelor’s: apply through UCAS by the late-January deadline - Warwick is highly selective, so pair it with Coventry or another modern university on the same form
- Master’s: apply directly from September; Coventry University also runs January and, on some courses, May starts, which is unusual and useful if you miss the autumn intake
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.5-7.0 with 6.0-6.5 in each band at Warwick; Coventry typically asks 6.0-6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band
- Some Warwick and WMG engineering master’s require an ATAS certificate before you can apply for the visa - it is free but takes several weeks, so start it the day you accept your offer
- After the CAS, apply for the Student visa with proof of funds, the health surcharge and a TB certificate where required; allow three to eight weeks
