Study in Hannover in English: universities, costs and careers
Hannover is the capital of Lower Saxony and one of the best-value large cities in Germany: rents are far below Munich or Hamburg and there are no tuition fees. Leibniz University Hannover is a broad technical university with world-class quantum optics and civil engineering; Hannover Medical School is one of Europe’s leading medical faculties; and the University of Veterinary Medicine is one of only five vet schools in the country. The city is also Germany’s trade-fair capital, which puts a surprising number of employers on the doorstep.

What it costs
No tuition fees, and a housing market that is not a lottery.
- Tuition: Lower Saxony charges no tuition fees at public universities - only a semester contribution of around €400, which includes a semester transport ticket
- Living costs: about €850–€1,150/month, in a housing market far less brutal than Munich, Frankfurt or Hamburg
- Blocked account (Sperrkonto) for the visa: around €11,900 for the year (about €992/month)
- Part-time work: 140 full or 280 half days a year (roughly 20 hours a week); public health insurance about €130/month
Life, safety & culture
Green, flat, easy to cycle - and the best place in Germany to learn the language.
- Daily language is German - Hannover is known for the clearest standard German in the country, which makes it a good place to learn it
- Green and walkable: the Maschsee lake, the Eilenriede city forest and the baroque Herrenhausen Gardens
- Safe, with strong public healthcare through statutory student insurance
- A central rail hub: Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt are all two to three hours away
How to apply & the bureaucracy
Each of the three universities runs its own admissions - check them separately.
- Apply via uni-assist or the university directly; deadlines are typically 15 July (winter) and 15 January (summer)
- English-taught programmes accept IELTS/TOEFL; German-taught ones need TestDaF or DSH
- Check anabin/DAAD recognition of your secondary certificate - some nationalities need a Studienkolleg first; human and veterinary medicine run through a separate national procedure
- After admission, open the blocked account and book the student-visa appointment immediately; allow 6–12 weeks
