Darmstadt calls itself a "City of Science" and has the institutions to back it up. TU Darmstadt is one of Germany’s leading technical universities; ESA’s European Space Operations Centre and the EUMETSAT satellite agency fly Europe’s missions from here; and ATHENE is the largest research centre for applied cyber security in Europe. It is a compact town of about 160,000 people, twenty minutes by train from Frankfurt, built around engineering, computer science and space.

No tuition and a state-wide transport ticket - but a small, tight housing market.
- Tuition: Hesse charges no tuition fees at public universities - only a semester contribution of around €300, including a ticket for public transport across the state
- Living costs: about €950–€1,250/month; the town is small and rooms are scarce, so apply for a hall place the moment you are admitted

- Apply via uni-assist or the university directly; deadlines are typically 15 July (winter) and 15 January (summer)
- English-taught programmes accept IELTS/TOEFL; German-taught ones need TestDaF or DSH
- Check anabin/DAAD recognition of your secondary certificate - some nationalities need a Studienkolleg first
- After admission, open the blocked account and book the student-visa appointment immediately; allow 6–12 weeks
