How to write a motivation letter for a European university

What a motivation letter really is

It is not your life story and not a CV in prose. It answers one question: why you, this programme, this university - and why now.

• One page, 4–6 short paragraphs, around 400–600 words
• Written for one specific programme - never one generic letter sent everywhere
• Also called a statement of purpose, letter of motivation or “Motivationsschreiben”
• Read in under two minutes by a committee with hundreds of files - make every line count

The structure that works (paragraph by paragraph)

Use this skeleton for every letter and simply re-fill it for each programme.

• Opening: who you are and exactly which programme you are applying for - no vague “I have always dreamed” lines
• Academic background: your degree and results, plus one or two concrete projects or courses that prepared you for this programme
• Why this programme and university: name specific modules, professors, labs or specialisations - prove you have read the curriculum
• Why this country: tie it to your field (research strength, industry, language) - not just “Europe is nice”
• Future goals: the career or research you want after graduation, and how this exact degree gets you there
• Close: a short, confident sign-off - thank them and restate your fit in one line

Cliches and mistakes that get you rejected

Committees read the same tired lines thousands of times. Cut every one of these.

• “Since childhood I have been passionate about…” - start with something real instead
• Generic praise like “your prestigious, world-renowned university” - they know their ranking
• Repeating your CV line by line - add insight, do not list
• Vague goals such as “I want to help my country” - say how, with this degree, concretely
• One letter for every university with the name swapped - committees can tell instantly
• Spelling and grammar errors, or text obviously written by AI and left unedited

Country specifics: Germany, France, Finland

• Germany: be structured, factual and modest - link your background tightly to the module list; for German-taught programmes, a few correct German lines help
• France: the “projet d’études” is central - Campus France wants a clear, logical study-and-career plan, written in French for French-taught programmes
• Finland: emphasise motivation, independence and fit with the programme’s research themes - Finnish universities value genuine, specific interest over flattery
• All three: honesty and consistency with the rest of your file matter more than fancy English

A short template you can adapt

Replace the brackets with your own specifics - never send it as-is.

• Para 1: “I am applying for the [programme] at [university] because [specific reason tied to the curriculum].”
• Para 2: “I hold/expect a [degree] from [institution], where I [concrete achievement or project relevant to the programme].”
• Para 3: “This programme fits my goals because of [specific module/lab/specialisation], which connects to [your goal].”
• Para 4: “After graduating I intend to [clear career or research goal], and this degree gives me [specific skill] to get there.”
• Para 5: “Thank you for considering my application. I am confident that [one-line restatement of your fit].”
